Cadmium, mercury, and lead in kidney cortex of living kidney donors: Impact of different exposure sources.

Background: Most current knowledge on kidney concentrations of nephrotoxic metals like cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), or lead (Pb) comes from autopsy studies. Assessment of metal concentrations in kidney biopsies from living subjects can be combined with information about exposure sources like smoking, diet, and occupation supplied by the biopsied subjects themselves.

Objectives: To determine kidney concentrations of Cd, Hg, and Pb in living kidney donors, and assess associations with common exposure sources and background factors.

Time to pregnancy among partners of men exposed to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate.

Objectives: This study assessed paternal occupational exposure to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) in association with reduced fertility.

Methods: Men working in three plants with DEHP exposure were studied retrospectively. Male and female employees and their partners were invited to participate if they had reported a pregnancy or an attempt to achieve a pregnancy.

Design: Case control study based on cases of lung cancer and community controls. Interviews were performed by two nurses specially trained for this project.

Objective: To investigate the association, previously reported in three European studies, between ownership of pet birds and the risk of lung cancer.

Design: A population based case-control study with a structured questionnaire administered by telephone.
