The female pelvis is often evolutionarily described as a compromise to accommodate the birthing process and bipedalism. This compromise puts a mother and baby at risk of fetopelvic disproportion, the mismatch between the size of the fetus and that of the mother's pelvis, impacting the ease with which the vaginal birthing process occurs. Obstructed labor, commonly caused by fetopelvic disproportion, is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity and has serious medical sequelae for the fetus.

The integration of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is becoming increasingly vital due to the rising number of critically ill patients and the shortage of board-certified intensivists. Successful recruitment and utilization of NPs and PAs into the MICU setting require a unique understanding of potential variations of the scope of practice based on state law and educational backgrounds, as well as the implementation of best practices around training and leadership support. Growing evidence suggests that the biopsychosocial complexity of their problems, which include cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, multiple medical illnesses, and care needs resulting from functional dependency, prolongs hospital stays by making medical treatment less efficient and the planning of post-discharge care more difficult.
