Breast cancer screening in an urban population in northern Italy.

A mammographic and clinical screening for breast cancer started in June 1987 in the Health District of Brescia, Northern Italy, including the town and 23 surrounding municipalities. This paper describes the organization and the results of the first 12 months of screening. Of 7791 invited women aged 50-60 years, 5217 (67%) agreed to participate.
