The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of iodine deficiency (ID) in Azerbaijan after the discontinuation of an iodine prophylaxis program by assessing the prevalence of goiter, iodine intake, and thyroid function. The study included 942 schoolchildren (475 boys and 467 girls) ages 8-14 years, from 13 distinct regions. The survey included the following: (1) clinical evaluation; (2) assessment of thyroid volume both by ultrasound and by palpation; (3) determination of iodide in a morning urine specimen using the classic Sandel-Kolthoff reaction in 347 schoolchildren; (4) determinations of thyrotropin (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyroglobulin (Tg), and anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO) in serum (n = 165) and TSH in whole blood spotted on filter paper (n = 942).

The constant concentration of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the extracellular fluids can be maintained by two mechanisms; the local and the hormonal one. In the case of the local, a potential Ca2+ balance is achieved between the extracellular space on the one hand and the bones and intertine on the other hand, which may come to concentrations of 7 mg/100 ml. The complete settlement of the Ca2+ level up to the normal limits of 9-11 mg/100 ml of plasma, is achieved by the action of the hormonal mechanism.

Two siblings (boy and girl) born to a mother with familial hypophosphatemic rickets had abnormal values of serum phosphorus and serum alkaline phosphatase at the age of six weeks. At this age therapy with 1 alpha-hydroxycholecalciferol (1 alpha OHD3) and phosphate was started resulting in both siblings having normal growth of body length and radiological healing of the bone lesions but persistently low values of fasting serum phosphorus during the time of observation up to 60 and 26 months of age, respectively. Phosphate and 1 alpha OHD3 have a positive influence on serum phosphorus through their effect on the intestine.
