Coevolution with predators leads to the use of low-risk habitats by many prey species, which promotes survival during early developmental phases. These nurseries are valued by conservation and management agencies because of their contributions to adult populations. However, the physical and geographic characteristics, like shallow depths and isolation from other marine habitats, that restrict access to predators and thereby reduce risk to juvenile animals can also limit scientific research.

Contactless measurements of water temperature are utilized in a number of sciences, such as oceanography, climatology, and biology. Previously reported Raman spectroscopy techniques exploited the changes in the shapes of water Raman bands. Interpretation of these changes is difficult since these bands are composed of multiple lines, each influenced not only by temperature but also by pressure and salinity.

A cylindrical sample cell is adapted to the problem of increasing the scattered-light signal from an optically thin liquid sample. The ends of the cylinder are coated with specularly reflecting aluminum to increase the signal by reflecting the stimulating light beam through the medium multiple times. The circumference of the cylinder is similarly coated to increase the fraction of the emitted light that is collected and sent into the slit of a spectrometer.

Purpose: To determine whether well-described patterns of altered perfusion in schizophrenia can be identified by using continuous arterial spin labeling (CASL) with a whole-brain imaging sequence.

Materials And Methods: This study was approved by the ethics committee of the local institutional review board, and written informed consent was obtained from all subjects. CASL was used to compare cerebral perfusion between 11 nonmedicated patients with schizophrenia and 25 healthy control subjects.
