Objectives: To determine if a restrictive transfusion threshold is noninferior to a higher threshold as measured by a composite outcome of mortality and serious morbidity.
Design: Transfusion Requirements in Cardiac Surgery (TRICS) III was a multicenter, international, open-label randomized controlled trial of two commonly used transfusion strategies in patients having cardiac surgery using a noninferiority trial design (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT02042898).
Background: Cerebral oxygen desaturation during cardiac surgery has been associated with adverse perioperative outcomes. Before a large multicenter randomized controlled trial (RCT) on the impact of preventing desaturations on perioperative outcomes, the authors undertook a randomized prospective, parallel-arm, multicenter feasibility RCT to determine whether an intervention algorithm could prevent desaturations.
Methods: Eight Canadian sites randomized 201 patients between April 2012 and October 2013.
Purpose: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a potentially serious complication of cardiac surgery. Anemia and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion have individually been identified as potentially modifiable risk factors, but their interrelationship with AKI has not been clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to explore the interrelationship of preoperative anemia, intraoperative anemia, and RBC transfusion on the day of surgery with AKI in cardiac surgery.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the off-label use of rFVIIa is expanding and whether this poses a net harm to patients.
Methods: For this historical cohort study, data were collected on all non-hemophilia patients who received rFVIIa from 2007 to 2010 at 16 Canadian centres, and the pattern of use was examined.
