Incisal Interference Correction after Severe Extrusive Luxation Trauma during Orthodontic Treatment.

This case report presents the treatment of a 12-year-old boy who suffered serious dental trauma, accompanied with buccal alveolar socket wall fractures, during orthodontic treatment. The maxillary right lateral incisor and canine were severely extruded and laterally luxated to the palatal side, resulting in an anterior crossbite and creating an incisal interference that prevented the jaws from closing in normal occlusion. During emergency treatment, the dentist attempted manual repositioning, but both severely extruded teeth were found to be immobile.

CXCL12-CXCR4 Interplay Facilitates Palatal Osteogenesis in Mice.

Cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs), identified by expression of transcription factor Sox9, migrate to the first branchial arch and undergo proliferation and differentiation to form the cartilage and bone structures of the orofacial region, including the palatal bone. Sox9 promotes osteogenic differentiation and stimulates CXCL12-CXCR4 chemokine-receptor signaling, which elevates alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-activity in osteoblasts to initiate bone mineralization. Disintegration of the midline epithelial seam (MES) is crucial for palatal fusion.

Heme Oxygenase Protects against Placental Vascular Inflammation and Abortion by the Alarmin Heme in Mice.

Both infectious as non-infectious inflammation can cause placental dysfunction and pregnancy complications. During the first trimester of human gestation, when palatogenesis takes place, intrauterine hematoma and hemorrhage are common phenomena, causing the release of large amounts of heme, a well-known alarmin. We postulated that exposure of pregnant mice to heme during palatogenesis would initiate oxidative and inflammatory stress, leading to pathological pregnancy, increasing the incidence of palatal clefting and abortion.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is a congenital deformity that occurs in about 1 of 700 newborns, affecting the dentition, bone, skin, muscles and mucosa in the orofacial region. A cleft can give rise to problems with maxillofacial growth, dental development, speech, and eating, and can also cause hearing impairment. Surgical repair of the lip may lead to impaired regeneration of muscle and skin, fibrosis, and scar formation.

Combined orthodontic, surgical, and restorative approach to treat a complicated crown-root fracture in a maxillary central incisor.

This case report shows the treatment of a severe traumatic tooth injury. For the maxillary right central incisor, the trauma was considered a complicated crown-root fracture. The level of the fracture line, the length of the remaining root segment, and the presence and condition of the tooth fragment determined the type of therapy.
