Several cases of myocarditis and pericarditis have been reported after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Interestingly, most cases were seen in male adolescents and young adults, commonly after 3-4 days of the second dose of mRNA vaccine. The vaccine contains the viral spike glycoprotein in the nucleoside-modified mRNA of the coronavirus that activates the proinflammatory cascades and immunological pathways, which can cause myocarditis and pericarditis.

Objective: Sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Vascular dysfunction contributes to atherogenesis and has been linked to insulin resistance.

Methods And Results: We measured insulin sensitivity by glucose tolerance test and vascular function by ultrasound and venous occlusion plethysmography in 20 healthy subjects (14 men, 6 women) at baseline and during 5 days of bed rest.

Mitochondria produce reactive oxygen species that may contribute to vascular dysfunction. alpha-Lipoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine reduce oxidative stress and improve mitochondrial function. In a double-blind crossover study, the authors examined the effects of combined alpha-lipoic acid/acetyl-L-carnitine treatment and placebo (8 weeks per treatment) on vasodilator function and blood pressure in 36 subjects with coronary artery disease.

There currently is great interest in translating findings about the importance of nitric oxide (NO) in vascular biology to the clinical arena. The bioactivity of endothelium-derived NO can readily be assessed in human subjects as vasodilation of conduit arteries or increased flow, which reflects vasodilation of resistance vessels. This chapter provides an update on the available noninvasive methodology to assess endothelium-dependent vasodilation in human subjects.

Background: Sequential visual field testing is an extremely helpful adjunct to ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography in the management of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis with the antiviral agents ganciclovir or foscarnet in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The authors studied the visual field defects found in a series of 110 patients with AIDS and CMV retinitis.

Methods: Ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography were performed on all patients.
