Objective: Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is an early biomarker for sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We assessed IL-6's ability to differentiate between late-onset sepsis (LOS) and NEC and between medical and surgical NEC.
Study Design: This retrospective cohort study included infants born preterm (birth weight <1500 g, gestational age <32 weeks) with ≥1 episodes of suspected late-onset sepsis (sLOS) between 2018 and 2023.
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a severe intestinal condition primarily affecting preterm neonates. It has a high mortality rate, particularly in infants with a birthweight of below 1,500 g or for those requiring surgical intervention. The European Reference Network for Inherited and Congenital Anomalies (ERNICA) has developed a clinical practice guideline to aid clinical decision-making pertaining to the surgical treatment and management of NEC in preterm neonates.

Design: Between November 2021 and February 2022, an anonymous prepost survey study was performed among 2 consecutive cohorts of medical students. The survey was taken 6 weeks prior to the surgery clerkship and repeated shortly after the surgery clerkship.
Background: Over half of preterm neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) require surgery, making it essential to understand short-term postoperative outcomes and complication rates. Therefore, this study aimed to provide an overview of 30-day postoperative complications for NEC. Secondary, risk factors for minor and major short-term postoperative complications were identified.
