Background: Most patients with terminal renal failure show arterial hypertension. In addition to casual blood pressure measurements in the clinic, home blood pressure measurement is recommended for these patients to control arterial blood pressure.

Patients: The study was performed in children with hemodialysis (HD; n = 11), peritoneal dialysis (PD; n = 14) or after renal transplantation (NTX; n = 21) from one department of Pediatric Nephrology.

The goal of renal transplantation is to achieve the best possible quality of life in patients with terminal renal failure. To evaluate some aspects of quality of life in patients with renal grafts during childhood of our center, data on medical, educational and professional rehabilitation were collected retrospectively. Between 1972 and 1997 135 renal transplantations had been performed in 123 patients below the age of 18 years.

A 16-year-old boy developed bullous lesions on fingers, ears, tongue, and buccal mucosa as well as cauliflower-like growths on the epiglottis and vocal cords 1 1/2 years after a second renal transplantation and exposure to sunlight while receiving cyclosporin A (CsA). Withdrawal of CsA was followed by complete resolution of skin and mucosal lesions. A predisposition for adverse reactions to CsA is suggested, as additional side effects of CsA therapy were also present.
