Evaluation of Virtual Care in Kidney Transplant Recipients in the Early Posttransplant Period.

Background: Though virtual care was widely adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence to support its use in kidney transplant recipients early after transplantation is limited.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing post kidney transplant outcomes in patients who received in-person transplant care before the COVID-19 pandemic with those who received mainly virtual transplant care during the COVID-19 pandemic. The usual-care group included 69 patients who received a kidney transplant from March 1, 2019 to September 1, 2019, and the virtual-care group included 64 patients who received a kidney transplant from September 1, 2020 to March 1, 2021.

Burden of CKD-Associated Pruritus and Adverse Clinical Outcomes in Patients Receiving Dialysis: The Stockholm Creatinine Measurements (SCREAM) Project.

Rationale & Objective: Pruritus is a common but not well-characterized complaint of patients receiving maintenance dialysis. This study sought to quantify the burden of pruritus and its associated adverse health outcomes in this population.

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death globally. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), compared in the ONTARGET trial (Ongoing Telmisartan Alone and in Combination with Ramipril Global Endpoint Trial), each prevent cardiovascular disease. However, trial results may not be generalizable, and their effectiveness in underrepresented groups is unclear.

Drug stewardship in chronic kidney disease to achieve effective and safe medication use.

People living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often experience multimorbidity and require polypharmacy. Kidney dysfunction can also alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications, which can modify their risks and benefits; the extent of these changes is not well understood for all situations or medications. The principle of drug stewardship is aimed at maximizing medication safety and effectiveness in a population of patients through a variety of processes including medication reconciliation, medication selection, dose adjustment, monitoring for effectiveness and safety, and discontinuation (deprescribing) when no longer necessary.
