Background/objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic immune-mediated pathology associated with the dysregulation of lipid metabolism. The administration of nervonic acid, a very long-chain fatty acid, has been shown to improve colonic inflammation in a mouse model of colitis. Our study aimed to quantify fecal levels of nervonic acid, as well as the very long-chain fatty acids, lignoceric acid, and pentacosanoic acid, to identify associations with IBD activity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To test the ability of the 2019 EULAR/ACR Classification Criteria for SLE score to predict lupus related hospitalization and overall cost of hospitalization.
Methods: 217 University of Kentucky patient records that met our preliminary inclusion criteria, 44 patients were selected by a random number generator algorithm for a thorough chart review to collect data needed for calculation of the 2019 EULAR/ACR Classification Criteria for SLE score. Total hospitalization cost was calculated by using hospital adjusted expenses per inpatient day data, which estimates the expense incurred by the hospital to provide services and thus removes the variability of charges and reimbursements introduced by insurance type.
Background/objectives: Bone morphogenetic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI) is an antagonist of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β type 1 signaling. BAMBI functions as an anti-fibrotic protein and exerts pro- as well as anti-cancerogenic activities. Our study aimed to correlate hepatocyte BAMBI protein levels in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with T stage, lymph node invasion, vessel invasion, grading, tumor size and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) stage, as well as with liver inflammation and fibrosis stages.

Dyslipidaemia is prevalent in at least 20% of Europeans, and dyslipidaemia before SARS-CoV-2 infection increases the risk for severe COVID-19 and mortality by 139%. Many reports described reduced serum cholesterol levels in virus-infected patients, in particular in those with severe disease.
