Creating transformational learning experiences for 21 century healthcare students through preclinical skills training at a South African university.

Background: Creating an inclusive interprofessional teaching and learning community can enhance student engagement and ultimately develop essential graduate attributes (GA) (also known as generic, transferable, core, soft, work-ready or nontechnical skills). The early practical development of GA within a diverse space is essential in health profession education, as students experience the transition to clinical training as challenging.

Aim: This paper describes the conceptualization and implementation of an inclusive interprofessional curriculum focused on GA development in the preclinical years.

Point-of-Care Viral Load Testing to Manage HIV Viremia During the Rollout of Dolutegravir-Based ART in South Africa: A Randomized Feasibility Study (POwER).

Background: Data are required regarding the feasibility of conducting a randomized trial of point-of-care viral load (VL) testing to guide management of HIV viremia and to provide estimates of effect to guide potential future trial design.

Setting: Two public South African clinics during the dolutegravir-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) rollout.

Methods: We randomized adults receiving first-line ART, with recent VL ≥1000 copies/mL, in a 1:1 ratio to receive point-of-care Xpert HIV-1 VL versus standard-of-care laboratory VL testing after 12 weeks.

Barriers that prevent adults living with HBV infection from participating in clinical research: experience from South Africa.

High profile international goals have been set for the elimination of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection as a public health threat by the year 2030. Developing and expanding equitable, accessible translational HBV research programmes that represent real-world populations are therefore an urgent priority for clinical and academic communities. We present experiences and insights by an expert interdisciplinary group focusing on barriers that impede adults living with HBV infection from participating in clinical studies.

A comprehensive overview of pneumococcal vaccination recommendations for adults in South Africa, 2022.

Pneumococcal infections remain a common global cause of significant morbidity and mortality. The first recommendations for adult pneumococcal vaccination, published in South Africa in 1999, contained information only on the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23). With the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) for use in adults and the perceived uncertainty that most clinicians had regarding use of these vaccines in adults, these vaccine recommendations were updated in 2022.

Perspectives of healthcare workers in South Africa on COVID-19 vaccination passports.

Background: Following the rollout of several effective vaccines against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many countries have introduced vaccination passports or certificates as a means of certifying that an individual has been vaccinated against, is immune to, or is presently uninfected with COVID-19. An extensive ethical debate has ensued.

Aim: To determine the perspectives of South African healthcare workers (HCWs) on the implementation of COVID-19 vaccination passports (C19VPs) in South Africa (SA).
