Red Blood Cell Transfusion Requirements Before and After Implementation of a Perioperative Patient Blood Management Program in Adult Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery. A Before and After Observational Study.

Objectives: Anemia and transfusion are common in cardiac surgery patients, and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Multiple perioperative interventions have been described to reduce blood transfusion, but are rarely combined altogether. The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery before and after the implementation of a perioperative patient blood management (PBM) program.

Case Studies in Neuroscience: Transcranial Doppler assessment of increased cerebral blood flow during iterative seizures.

This case study aimed at monitoring ictal vasodilation in a clinical setting to confirm the experimental data on enhanced cerebral perfusion during epileptic seizures. Clinical observation of a patient presenting relapsing seizures in the intensive care unit. Five-year results from the prospective European multicentre cohort study on radiofrequency segmental thermal ablation for incompetent great saphenous veins.

Background: This was a prospective study of radiofrequency segmental thermal ablation (RFA) for the treatment of incompetent varicose great saphenous veins (GSVs). The present report describes long-term follow-up at 5 years.

Methods: The 5-year follow-up of this multicentre European study included assessment of the Venous Clinical Severity Score (VCSS), and GSV occlusion and reflux on duplex imaging.

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) for refractory cardiac arrest after drowning: an 11-year experience.

Aim: Neuroprotective effects of hypothermia may explain surprisingly high survival rates reported after drowning in cold water despite prolonged submersion. We described a cohort of refractory hypothermic cardiac arrests (CA) due to drowning treated by extracorporeal life support (ECLS) and aimed to identify criteria associated with 24-h survival.
