Pulmonary multiplex polymerase chain reaction (m-PCR) allows rapid pathogen detection. We aimed to assess its impact on initial antibiotic prescriptions in ventilated patients with suspected pneumonia. Between November 2020 and March 2022,ventilated patients with suspected pneumonia hospitalized in our ICU who benefited from respiratory sampling simultaneously tested using conventional microbiological methods and m-PCR were included.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the characteristics, management, and outcomes of hospitalized patients with Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) treated with fidaxomicin compared to other therapies.
  • Of the participants, a significant percentage were immunocompromised (39.1%) and had severe (59.2%) or recurrent (36.4%) CDI; fidaxomicin treatment showed a high clinical cure rate of 92.2% and a low recurrence rate of 16.3% after 3 months.
  • The findings suggest that fidaxomicin is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for CDI, even among high-risk patients, with very few adverse events reported and no related deaths.

In our intensive care unit, coincident outbreaks were caused by concomitant cross-transmission of 2 carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains harboring distinct mechanisms of resistance. One strain produced extended-spectrum ß-lactamase in combination with reduced permeability. The other produced oxacillinase-48 carbapenemase.

Diagnostic of early-onset neonatal infection (EONI) remains an emergency. Recent studies underline the potential benefit of using Procalcitonin (PCT) in early diagnosis of bacterial infections in neonates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of an umbilical blood cord PCT based algorithm in newborns suspected of EONI.

Background: Diagnosis of early neonatal infection remains an emergency. Since clinical symptoms and biological markers are neither sensitive nor specific, many newborns suspected of infection undergo biological analysis and empirical antibiotic treatment while awaiting results. Recent studies underline the benefit of using procalcitonin (PCT) to differentiate inflammatory diseases and viral infections from bacterial infections.
