Reference Values of Ceruloplasmin across the Adult Age Range in a Large Italian Healthy Population.

Background: Ceruloplasmin (Cp) is the most important serum copper transport protein playing a key role in the binding of iron to transferrin. It is a positive acute-phase response protein and the first-level diagnostic marker for Wilson disease and aceruloplasminemia. However, standardization of Cp measurement has not been successful, and assay specific reference levels of Cp are required.

Platelet to lymphocyte ratio as a predictive biomarker of liver fibrosis (on elastography) in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related liver disease.

Background: Liver fibrosis is a frequent complication of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Its evaluation is very important for the prognosis of these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of exploiting the platelet to lymphocyte ratio and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio as non-invasive predictive markers of liver fibrosis.

Prevalence of HFE mutations in upper Northern Italy: study of 1132 unrelated blood donors.

Background: In the Italian general population, prevalence of C282Y is lower than in Northern European countries. We hypothesised a higher prevalence of C282Y in Northern than in Central and Southern Italy. We previously identified a nonsense mutation (W169X) in haemochromatosis probands originating from a Northern Italian region (Brianza).
