Heart function measured by electrocardiograms (ECG) is crucial for patient care. ECG generated waveforms are used to find patterns of irregularities in cardiac cycles in patients. In many cases, irregularities evolve over an extended period of time that requires continuous monitoring.

New controller and closed loop transfer functions for move suppressed and shifted dynamic matrix control were derived in order to compare the controller robustness on several plants as a function of tuning parameters lambda and m. The derivation of these transfer functions are for any order plant requiring its open loop step or impulse response. A generic control design algorithm was developed for selecting the controller tuning parameters using controller robustness as a performance index, in the presence of plant parameter variations and uncertainties.

Discrete-time controller and closed-loop transfer functions were developed for move suppressed lambda and the recently formulated m-shifted multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) dynamic matrix control (DMC). Using these transfer functions, robust analyses were conducted for MIMO plants by varying corresponding delay and gain ratios of the system. In all instances, robust plots indicate that the shifted DMC is less sensitive and hence more robust to variations in the plant parameters than move suppressed DMC.

Mixing pharmaceutical preparations of soluble neutral regular insulin solution (NRI) and neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH) crystalline insulin suspension leads to a reduction in the measurable amount of soluble insulin in the formulation supernatant. However in spite of the loss in soluble insulin, the time-actions of these components have been shown, in clinical trials, to be unaffected. The interaction between these different physical forms of insulin has been studied using reversed-phase HPLC, isothermal titrating calorimetry, and Doppler electrophoretic light scattering analysis.

The photochemistry of diacetylene (C4H2), the largest hydrocarbon to be unambiguously identified in planetary atmospheres, is of considerable importance to understanding the mechanisms by which complex molecules are formed in the solar system. In this work, the primary products of C4H2's ultraviolet photochemistry were determined in a two-laser pump-probe scheme in which the products of C4H2 photoexcitation are detected by vacuum ultraviolet photoionization in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Three larger hydrocarbon primary products were observed with good yield in the C4H2* + C4H2 reaction: C6H2, C812, and C8H3.
