Extremely preterm birth predisposes infants to bronchopulmonary dysplasia and associated pulmonary hypertension (PH). High altitude exposure during pregnancy has also been shown to worsen infant lung and pulmonary vascular outcomes. Animal models addressing the mechanisms for how maternal hypoxia impacts postnatal and adult lung and pulmonary vascular outcomes are lacking and development of a model to address this gap would enable new mechanistic studies.

Exposure to air pollution from coal-fired power plants and impacts on human health: a scoping review.

Communities living in proximity to coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) may be at greater risk of negative health impacts from exposure to air pollution than communities living further away. The aim of this scoping review was to provide an update on the evidence of the health risks of air pollution exposure associated with living in proximity to CFPPs and to evaluate the relationship between residential proximity and the extent of the health burden. We followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and searched Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science for relevant studies from inception up to 31 January 2024.

Relationships of hematocrit concentration with dementia from a multiethnic population-based study.

Objective: Red blood cell (RBC) concentration impacts cerebrovascular disease, yet it is unclear whether RBC concentrations relate to dementia risk, particularly in racially/ethnically diverse cohorts. We investigated whether RBC concentrations associate with incident dementia risk in a diverse population of stroke-free individuals and explored whether cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) mediates this relationship.

Methods: A longitudinal observational analysis was performed using a population-based cohort of stroke-free, older adult participants (>50 years) from the Northern Manhattan Study (NOMAS) enrolled between 2003 and 2008.
