The incidence of primary and secondary bicipital tendinitis remains unknown. In our prospective study, 200 consecutive shoulders underwent arthroscopic subacromial decompression for impingement syndrome. A biceps tenodesis was performed in 80 shoulders (40%) featuring macroscopic degeneration of the long head of the biceps; rotator cuff tears were apparent in 91% of these shoulders, the mean patient age being 55 years.

A different technique for closed reduction of the dislocated total hip arthroplasty is described. The maneuver is effective and efficient, may be performed without an assistant, and reduces potential risks to the surgeon.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe incidence of inappropriate use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by nonsurgeon physicians for evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders is high when assessed using treatment-oriented criteria in a university medical center. The charts of 71 patients who underwent 90 MRIs of the spine or extremity revealed an inappropriateness rate of 22%. The rate of inappropriateness was higher in the outpatient setting and varied little according to the anatomic region studied.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPhysical examination of a woman with painful swelling about the ulnar side of her dominant right wrist but no history of trauma revealed a freely mobile soft-tissue mass on the ulnar aspect of the wrist. Radiographs of the wrist were normal. At surgery, a 1 cm x 1 cm ganglion immediately adjacent to the hypothenar muscles was dissected circumferentially and found to have a stalk originating from the ulnar aspect of the pisotriquetral joint.
