To explore the possibility that the half-life of insulin changes after trauma, five control subjects and 19 severe trauma patients received intravenous glucose (0.5 gm/kg) in 5 minutes to raise rapidly the insulin levels, followed immediately by 300 mg of intravenous diazoxide over 5 minutes to inhibit any further insulin secretion. Serial blood samples were analyzed for immunoreactive insulin, and insulin half-life was calculated.

Should this nonaqueous (molecular) exchangeable H+ turn out to be a large fraction of total exchangeable H+, TBW measurement by tritiated water (THO) dilution would display a systematic upward and non-random error. TBW was measured by THO dilution and subsequently by total body desiccation in 21 rats (weight 227+/-83 g, mean+/-SD).

A total of 388 patients received 427 renal isografts and allografts between March 1951 and October 1972. Of these, 58% were still alive at the end of the followup period, 50% with a functioning graft.
