Background: Obesity has been associated with human obstructive sleep apnoea and canine brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. The effect of body condition score (BCS) on structures of the oropharynx, nasopharynx and upper airway of the horse has not been investigated.

Objectives: To investigate the effect of BCS on tongue measurements, soft palate angle and basihyoid depth in horses.

A growing body of evidence demonstrates occupational night shift hazards. Decades of research point to health risks for nurses contributing to chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cognitive/mental health, and cancers-all associated with earlier mortality. Patient safety, recruitment and retention of quality nursing workforce, and related costs are important concerns associated with night shift work.

Improving Firearm Screening and Safe Storage Counseling in a Primary Care Pediatric Practice.

We conducted a quality improvement (QI) study to increase rates of firearm screening/safety counseling by 25% over 10 months for children (4-18 years) at preventive visits in an academic continuity clinic. Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles consisted of 1) (January 2023) educating providers about best practices for screening, safe storage counseling, and use of cable firearm locks; 2) (May 2023) revising the preventive visit note template to prompt providers on best practices; and 3) (September 2023) providing caregiver educational resources to support safe storage practices. The baseline firearm screening rate was 38%.

Colonization of a novel habitat is often followed by phenotypic diversification in the wake of ecological opportunity. However, some habitats should be inherently more constraining than others if the challenges of that environment offer few evolutionary solutions. We examined this push-and-pull on macroevolutionary diversification following habitat transitions in the anglerfishes (Lophiiformes).
