Cardiac hypertrophy is often associated with an increased sympathetic drive, and both in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the development of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in response to either alpha- or beta-adrenergic stimulation. Because an association between the Na+/H+ exchanger and cellular growth has been proposed, this study aimed to analyze the possible role of the antiporter in isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Isoproterenol alone (5 mg/kg IP once daily) or combined with a selective inhibitor of the Na+/H+ exchanger activity (3 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) BIIB723) was given to male Wistar rats for 30 days.

The presence of a transplanted, fast-growing hepatoma (SS1-K) produces conspicuous ultrastructural changes in pituitary STH cells of C3H-S male mice. These changes are suggestive of an increased secretion of growth hormone only during the first stages of the tumor development. The hepatoma influence does not seem to be clearly related to the illumination regimen or time of killing.

The effect of 22:6 omega 3 acid provided by dietary fish oil on the development of germinal tissue of rat testes, fatty acid composition of lipids, and linoleic or alpha-linolenic acid delta 6 desaturation capacity was investigated. Results were compared to those obtained in animals fed methyl palmitate and sunflower seed oil (linoleate). At 7 and 9 weeks of age, development of germinal tissue of animals fed fish oil was normal.

Acanthamoeba castellanii were incubated in vivo with 1(-14)C linoleic and 1(-14)C-alpha-linolenic acids. The incorporation of the acids into lipid fractions was studied. Labeling was found mainly in triglycerides and phospholipids.
