The sugar, 2,3-diacetamido-2,3-dideoxy-d-mannuronic acid, was first identified ∼40 years ago in the O-antigen of Pseudomonas aeruginosa O:3,a,d. Since then, it has been observed on the O-antigens of various pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria including Bordetella pertussis, Escherichia albertii, and Pseudomonas mediterranea. Previous studies have established that five enzymes are required for its biosynthesis beginning with uridine dinucleotide (UDP)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc).

This makes the HLC assay suited to quantify monoclonal immunoglobulins (M-protein) and for monitoring of patients with monoclonal gammopathies. This method is particularly advantageous for those samples in which electrophoretic quantification of the M-protein is not possible.

This 8-week, randomized, double-blind study compared the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of three fixed doses of controlled-release ipsapirone (10-, 30-, and 50-mg dose once daily) with placebo in 410 patients with moderate to severe major depression (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression [HAM-D] score > or = 20). The 10-mg ipsapirone treatment arm was discontinued early in the study.
