Importance: Both sickle cell anemia (SCA) and socioeconomic status have been associated with altered brain structure and cognitive disability, yet precise mechanisms underlying these associations are unclear.

Objective: To determine whether brains of individuals with and without SCA appear older than chronological age and if brain age modeling using brain age gap (BAG) can estimate cognitive outcomes and mediate the association of socioeconomic status and disease with these outcomes.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cross-sectional study of 230 adults with and without SCA, individuals underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cognitive assessment.

Background: Paralytic ileus and intestinal obstruction (PIAIO) pose significant public health concerns, given the notable scarcity of current research on their disease burden and trends. This study evaluated the global burden of PIAIO from 1990 to 2021 and forecastsed their future burden over the next decade.

Methods: Using the latest data from Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, we obtained the prevalence, incidence, mortality and disability adjusted life years (DALYs) data for these conditions, along with their corresponding age-standardized rate (ASR) indicators.

Nanofluidics is an interdisciplinary field of study that bridges hydrodynamics, statistical physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, and other fields to investigate the transport of fluids and ions on the nanometric scale. The progress in this field, however, has been constrained by challenges in fabricating nanofluidic devices suitable for systematic investigations. Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) materials have revolutionized the development of nanofluids.

The widely used Radix Astragali (RA) has significant therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment (CI) caused by type 2 diabetes (T2DM). However, the effective active ingredients and the precise mechanism underly RA alleviation of T2DM-induced CI still require further study. In this study, we aim to elucidate whether and how jaranol, a key effective active ingredient in RA, influences CI in db/db mice.

Advancement of sulfur (S) cathode of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is hindered by issues such as insulating nature of sulfur, sluggish redox kinetics, polysulfide dissolution and shuttling. To address these issues, we initiate a study on applying an important amino acid of protein, arginine (Arg), as a functional additive into S cathode. Based on our simulation study, the positively charged Arg facilitates strong interactions with polysulfides.
