Participant Contributions to Person-Generated Health Data Research Using Mobile Devices: Scoping Review.

Background: Mobile devices offer an emerging opportunity for research participants to contribute person-generated health data (PGHD). There is little guidance, however, on how to best report findings from studies leveraging those data. Thus, there is a need to characterize current reporting practices so as to better understand the potential implications for producing reproducible results.

Extensive research has demonstrated endurance exercise to be neuroprotective. Whether these neuroprotective benefits are mediated, in part, by hepatic ketone production remains unclear. To investigate the role of hepatic ketone production on brain health during exercise, healthy 6-month-old female rats underwent viral knockdown of the rate-limiting enzyme in the liver that catalyses the first reaction in ketogenesis: 3-hydroxymethylglutaryl-CoA synthase 2 (HMGCS2).

Utility of Genetic Testing in Adults with CKD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Key Points: Diagnostic yield of genetic testing in adults with CKD is 40%. Risk factors including positive family history and extra-kidney features associate with higher diagnostic yield, although young age at testing did not. Seventeen percent of patients who received a genetic diagnosis were reclassified into a different phenotype after testing.

Linking E. coli to fibrosis in Crohn's disease.

In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Ahn and colleagues provide evidence that the adherent intestinal E. coli produced the metallophore yersiniabactin, which sequesters zinc to drive intestinal fibrosis in a HIF-1α-dependent manner.
