Article Synopsis
  • Risk stratification algorithms (RSAs) can help reduce antibiotic duration and hospital stay for early-onset sepsis in low- and middle-income countries, like Kenya, where these issues are prevalent.
  • In a study of 262 neonates, different RSAs were compared, revealing that the CE-M RSA effectively reduced antibiotic duration by 2 days and length of stay by 4 days, while other algorithms provided less accurate risk assessments.
  • The findings suggest that implementation of these algorithms could decrease hospital stay and antibiotic use, emphasizing the need for further research on RSAs combined with other interventions to manage early-onset sepsis in resource-limited settings.

Background: The proper spatial and temporal regulation of dorsal telencephalic progenitor behavior is a prerequisite for the formation of the highly-organized, six-layered cerebral cortex. Premature differentiation of cells, disruption of cell cycle timing, excessive apoptosis, and/or incorrect neuronal migration signals can have devastating effects, resulting in a number of neurodevelopmental disorders involving microcephaly and/or lissencephaly. Though genes encoding many key players in cortical development have been identified, our understanding remains incomplete.
