The discovery of ferroelectricity in hafnia based thin films has catalyzed significant research focused on understanding the ferroelectric property origins and means to increase stability of the ferroelectric phase. Prior studies have revealed that biaxial tensile stress via an electrode "capping effect" is a suspected ferroelectric phase stabilization mechanism. This effect is commonly reported to stem from a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) incongruency between the hafnia and top electrode.

Background And Objectives: To compare long-term seizure control in patients with long-term VNS (vagal nerve stimulator) stimulation (VNS-on) with those who discontinued VNS after >3 years (VNS-off).

Methods: Patients with refractory epilepsy with VNS therapy for >3 years (and follow-up for >2 years after VNS discontinuation for VNS-off patients) were included. Patients with brain surgery <3 years after VNS were excluded.

Importance: Acellular human amniotic fluid (hAF) is an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory fluid that has been used to treat various pro-inflammatory conditions. In a feasibility study, we have previously demonstrated that hAF could be safely administered to severely ill patients with coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). The impact of acellular hAF on markers of systemic inflammation and clinical outcomes during COVID-19 infection remain unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates two teaching methods—landmark-guided palpation and ultrasound-guided techniques—for training medical students on subclavian central venous access using formalin-embalmed cadavers.
  • After training, students' confidence improved significantly in both groups, with those trained using ultrasound showing better performance with fewer skin punctures and failures compared to the palpation group.
  • The conclusion emphasizes that using cadavers for practice enhances confidence in procedural skills, potentially leading to better outcomes and fewer complications in real clinical settings.

(1) Background: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Unfortunately, no noticeable symptoms exist until mid- to late-stage glaucoma, leading to substantial costs to the patient and the healthcare system. (2) Methods: The Student Sight Savers Program, an initiative started at Johns Hopkins University, was designed to meet the needs of community screening for glaucoma.
