Crisis Stabilization Units (CSUs) are short-term residential facilities that provide care to people experiencing mental health crises, seeking to reduce reliance on local emergency departments and avoid unnecessary jail detention. Despite these intentions, there is little foundational literature to support research on CSU efficacy and a dearth of research on the sociodemographic characteristics and specific needs of CSU patients. Here, we recruited and surveyed 208 participants admitted to one of two focal Arkansas CSUs on their sociodemographic characteristics, justice-involvement, mental health, substance use, and health care utilization.

Jail programming is rarely informed by site-specific health needs, diagnostic-specific screening tools that are validated, or the input of incarcerated individuals. Using the community needs assessment (CNA) framework, we aimed to fill these gaps among people incarcerated in the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility (PCRDF), Arkansas' largest jail. Participants were 179 adults at the PCRDF who completed surveys and open-ended questions focused on (a) their mental and behavioral health and (b) programming needs at the facility.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers developed a transgenic sheep model (OVT73) to study HD, which shows early signs of the disease without motor symptoms or cell loss at a young age, aiding in understanding disease onset.
  • * A study of the sheep's brain revealed increased expression of certain receptors and transporters, suggesting that excitotoxicity from glutamate may trigger early neurodegeneration, but protective mechanisms could help buffer against cell damage.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of arginine (Arg); the combination of Arg and glutamine (Gln); as well as an amino acid-based solution (MIX) containing Arg, Gln, threonine (Thr), and grape extract, on performance, intestinal permeability, and expression of selected mechanistic genes. Using 240 male Ross 308 off-sex broiler chickens, four experimental treatments were replicated six times with 10 birds per replicate. The experimental treatments included 5 g/kg Arg, 2.

Background: The pathological mechanism of cellular dysfunction and death in Huntington's disease (HD) is not well defined. Our transgenic HD sheep model (OVT73) was generated to investigate these mechanisms and for therapeutic testing. One particular cohort of animals has undergone focused investigation resulting in a large interrelated multi-omic dataset, with statistically significant changes observed comparing OVT73 and control 'omic' profiles and reported in literature.
