Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated NOx and black carbon emissions from six heavy-duty diesel and CNG vehicles in California, using portable emissions measurement systems during typical operations.
  • CNG vehicles emitted significantly more black carbon (3-7 times higher) compared to diesel vehicles, but their NOx emissions were drastically lower, averaging 35 times less than diesel vehicles.
  • The findings indicate that real-time emissions measurements offer better insights for assessing population exposure in freight corridors, with over 70% of harmful emissions occurring in disadvantaged communities.

Traffic related non-tailpipe particulate matter emissions can rival the continuously decreasing tailpipe emissions in modern fleets. Non-tailpipe emissions have become the dominating source of traffic emissions in California already. This study measured ambient PM and PM concentrations at near road environments for two major highways in California, I-5 in Anaheim and I-710 in Long Beach.

Unlabelled: The aim of this study was to determine whether X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) could be used to detect changes in hair zinc concentration in response to a modest daily increase in zinc from the consumption of zinc biofortified wheat flour. This study was conducted as part of an effectiveness trial (BiZiFED2) exploring the potential for zinc biofortified wheat to alleviate zinc deficiency in adolescent girls aged 10-16 years in Pakistan (trial registration ID ISRCTN17107812). A randomized controlled design was used.

Forensic assessment employs an array of methods to identify human remains. Radiologic examinations with panoramic radiographs, computed tomography scans, Waters view, and nuclear magnetic resonance imaging may offer evidentiary clues in challenging cases, such as mass disasters. In these cases, alternative forensic tools are used to narrow lists of target victims using their biological features.
