Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the effects of the antiseizure drug lacosamide on neonatal mice, particularly focusing on its neurotoxic potential in combination with levetiracetam.
  • * Injections of various treatments were given to the mice, including saline, phenobarbital, lacosamide, levetiracetam, and their combination.
  • * Results indicated that while phenobarbital increased apoptotic cell death, neither lacosamide alone nor in combination with levetiracetam showed any significant increase in apoptosis compared to the saline group, implying they may be safer for developing brains.

Background: Bilateral Rasmussen encephalitis is a rare variant of a debilitating, typically unihemispheric disease with limited treatment options. Few cases with bilateral histopathology have been reported, all with poor seizure control following surgery. Here we report a favorable outcome following hemispherotomy in a four-year-old male with biopsy-confirmed bilateral disease.

Objective: Exposure of neonatal macaques to the antiseizure medications phenobarbital and midazolam (PbM) causes widespread apoptotic death of neurons and oligodendrocytes. We studied behavior and neurocognitive performance in 12 to 24 month-old macaques treated as neonates with PbM.

Methods: A total of 14 monkeys received phenobarbital and midazolam over 24 hours under normothermia (n = 8) or mild hypothermia (n = 6).
