Multi-generational exposure of Daphnia magna to pharmaceuticals: Effects on colonization, reproduction, and habitat selection behavior.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is increasing due to their growing use for human health. Although most studies are based on short exposures to these contaminants, the present study has emerged from the need to study pharmaceuticals in aquatic organisms over a long-term exposure to understand any multi-generational chronic effects and alterations regarding habitat selection. Therefore, this study shows: (1) the ability of Daphnia magna to colonize environments contaminated with caffeine, ibuprofen and fluoxetine, and (2) the effect of these pharmaceuticals on reproduction and habitat selection (under two scenarios: with and without food) after a long-term exposure period of three generations.

Prevalence of Oropharyngeal Dysphagia in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) in children, as diagnosed through instrumental evaluation, and to identify associated risk factors.

Methods: A systematic search was conducted across six databases (Embase, LILACS, LIVIVO, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science), as well as gray literature sources (ASHA, Google Scholar, and ProQuest). Studies involving children (under 12 years of age), diagnosed using instrumental methods such as videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), were included.

Nonlinear optical characterization of opaque and scattering media: from rough surfaces to powder.

We introduce the reflection intensity correlation scan (RICO-scan), a nonlinear (NL) optical technique designed to characterize opaque and scattering media, where traditional transmittance methods fail. By analyzing variations in the intensity correlation functions of speckle patterns generated from backscattered light, the RICO-scan was applied to an unpolished silicon surface and silicon powders, providing information on the intensity dependence of the complex refractive index. Numerical simulations based on Fresnel equations and speckle propagation corroborated the experimental results, demonstrating RICO-scan's robustness and versatility.

MOG-IgG is rare in AQP4-IgG seronegative NMO phenotype in Brazil.

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a rare autoimmune disease most frequently characterized by a neuromyelitis optica (NMO) phenotype, comprising both simultaneous or sequential optic neuritis (ON) and longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM). Symptoms of brainstem, diencephalic and cerebral involvement may also occur. While most NMOSD patients test positive for serum aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies, some seronegative patients test positive for oligodendrocyte glycoprotein-IgG (MOG-IgG).

Point-of-care ultrasonography for diagnosis of purulent pericarditis postappendectomy: a case report.

Purulent pericarditis is rare condition in the modern era of antibiotics. However, it is a serious condition as it has an accelerated progression and is difficult to diagnose due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, resulting in high mortality. Herein, we present a case in which a 36-year-old male patient with otherwise unremarkable medical history developed abdominal sepsis complicated by purulent pericarditis post-appendectomy.
