RNA(i) interference is a gene silencing mechanism triggered by double-stranded (ds)RNA, which promises to contribute to species-specific insect pest control strategies. The first step toward the application of RNAi as an insecticide is to enable efficient gene silencing upon dsRNA oral delivery. The desert locust, is a devastating agricultural pest.

Members of the insulin superfamily activate the evolutionarily highly conserved insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway, involved in regulation of growth, energy homeostasis, and longevity. In the current study we focus on aphids to gain more insight into the evolution of the IRPs and how they may contribute to regulation of the insulin-signaling pathway. Using the latest annotation of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) genome, and combining sequence alignments and phylogenetic analyses, we identified seven putative IRP encoding-genes, with IRP1-IRP4 resembling the classical insulin and insulin-like protein structures, and IRP5 and IRP6 bearing insulin-like growth factor (IGF) features.

Apoptosis, a conserved form of programmed cell death, shows interspecies differences that may reflect evolutionary diversification and adaptation, a notion that remains largely untested. Among insects, the most speciose animal group, the apoptotic pathway has only been fully characterized in , and apoptosis-related proteins have been studied in a few other dipteran and lepidopteran species. Here, we studied the apoptotic pathway in the aphid , an insect pest belonging to the Hemiptera, an earlier-diverging and distantly related order.

Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) are single-phase amorphous systems, where drug molecules are molecularly dispersed (dissolved) in a polymer matrix. The molecular dispersion of the drug molecules is responsible for their improved dissolution properties. Unambiguously establishing the phase behavior of the ASDs is of utmost importance.

In spite of the large research efforts in the past two decades, it is still difficult, if possible at all, to predict what manufacturing technology will lead to the best amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) in terms of drug to polymer ratio ("drug loading") and physical stability. In general, ASDs can be prepared by solvent based methods, heat based methods and mechanochemical activation. In the current study, one manufacturing technique per category was selected: spray drying, hot melt extrusion and cryo-milling, respectively.
