Ecotones are the transition zones between ecosystems and can exhibit steep gradients in ecosystem properties controlling flows of energy and organisms between them. Ecotones are understood to be sensitive to climate and environmental changes, but the potential for spatiotemporal dynamics of ecotones to act as indicators of such changes is limited by methodological and logistical constraints. Here, we use a novel combination of satellite remote sensing and analyses of spatial synchrony to identify the tropical dry forest-rainforest ecotone in Area de Conservación Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Background: Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes and increases the risk of falls, possibly through gait (quality) impairments in daily life. Characteristics of gait quality have been associated with peripheral neuropathy in a laboratory setting, but little is known about the more relevant association with gait quality in daily life.

Research Question: What is the association between peripheral neuropathy and gait quality characteristics in daily life in people with diabetes?

Methods: Data from two cross-sectional studies were combined in an exploratory analysis, including a total of 98 participants with diabetes (mean age: 68 (SD 7) years, 32 females), of which 68 with peripheral neuropathy.

Tropical forests are incredibly diverse in structure and function. Despite, or perhaps because of, this diversity, tropical biologists often conduct research exclusively in one or perhaps a few forest types. Rarely do we study the ecotone-the interstitial region between forest types.

Article Synopsis
  • Wearing prescribed footwear is crucial for preventing diabetes-related foot ulcers, but adherence rates are lower than ideal, with an overall rate of 63%.
  • Adherence is significantly lower at home (59%) compared to outside home environments (74%), while individuals tend to be more active at home (2.2 hours/day).
  • The study found that higher blood sugar levels (Hba1c) and more daily steps were linked to lower footwear adherence, highlighting the need for further research into psychological factors influencing adherence patterns.

Background: Severe fatigue is a common symptom for people with visual impairment, with a detrimental effect on emotional functioning, cognition, work capacity and activities of daily living. A previous study found that depression was one of the most important determinants of fatigue, but less is known about disease-specific factors in this patient population. This study aimed to explore the association between visual impairment severity and fatigue in adults with low vision, both directly and indirectly, with vision-specific factors and depression as potential mediators.
