This study focuses on the use of three isostructural NO donor ligands, specifically known to form complexes with copper ions, to chelate Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The corresponding Cu(II) complexes feature a dinuclear copper core mimicking the active site of natural superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes while also creating a coordination environment favorable for catalase (CAT) activity, being thus appealing as catalytic antioxidant systems. Given the critical role of copper dysregulation in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), these complexes may help mitigate the harmful effects of free Cu(II) ions: the goal is to transform copper's reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating properties into beneficial ROS-scavenging action.

X-ray-induced damage is one of the key topics in radiation chemistry. Substantial damage is attributed to low-energy electrons and radicals emerging from direct inner-shell photoionization or produced by subsequent processes. We apply multi-electron coincidence spectroscopy to X-ray-irradiated aqueous solutions of inorganic ions to investigate the production of low-energy electrons (LEEs) in a predicted cascade of intermolecular charge- and energy-transfer processes, namely electron-transfer-mediated decay (ETMD) and interatomic/intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD).

Purpose: To prove the safety and performance of the hypothermic corneal storage medium "Corneal Chamber" and the rinsing solution "PSS-L" in support of the new (CE) certification process in accordance with the Medical Device Regulation.

Methods: Fifteen (n=15) human donor corneas and 11 (n=11) porcine corneas were evaluated for the following parameters: endothelial cell density (ECD) and mortality, percentage of hexagonal cells (HEX%), coefficient of cellular area variation (CV%) and corneal transparency at Day 0 and after 14±1 days of storage in Corneal Chamber medium at 2-8°C. Then, the same parameters were assessed after rinsing of corneas in PSS-L for 1 min at room temperature.

Purpose: An ideal dye for intraocular use should effectively stain the target tissue while being easy to apply and remove. Additionally, it should not have any adverse effects resulting from prolonged contact with the retinal tissue. Recently, concerns have been raised about the safety of some vital dyes during surgical procedures as they may cross the internal limiting membrane and deposit on the retina.

The target asymmetry , recoil asymmetry , and beam-target double polarization observable were determined in exclusive and photoproduction off quasi-free protons and, for the first time, off quasi-free neutrons. The experiment was performed at the electron stretcher accelerator ELSA in Bonn, Germany, with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector setup, using a linearly polarized photon beam and a transversely polarized deuterated butanol target. Effects from the Fermi motion of the nucleons within deuterium were removed by a full kinematic reconstruction of the final state invariant mass.
