Fractalkine (CX3CL1) is a chemokine involved in cell-cell interactions and in leukocyte chemoattraction. Sexual transmission of HIV is one of the main routes of transmission of AIDS. Despite the fact that the virus has been found in the semen and germ cells of patients with HIV, little is known about how the virus infects the cells of the genital tract. We studied the cellular distribution of CD4, a receptor necessary for HIV infection, and the major HIV co-receptors CCR3, CCR5 and CXCR4 in the rat and human testis.

Testicular inflammation is classically observed in the pathogenesis of viral and bacterial infection or tumoral invasion. In these situations, leukocyte infiltration is generally encountered. GRO/KC (growth-related oncogene) and IP-10/mob-1 (IFN-gamma-inducible protein) are two CXC-chemokines which attract neutrophils and activated T lymphocytes, respectively, have been studied for their ability to participate to testicular inflammation (orchitis).
