Unrepaired DNA damage encountered by the cellular replication machinery can stall DNA replication, ultimately leading to cell death. In the DNA damage tolerance pathway translesion synthesis (TLS), replication stalling is alleviated by the recruitment of specialized polymerases to synthesize short stretches of DNA near a lesion. Although TLS promotes cell survival, most TLS polymerases are low-fidelity and must be tightly regulated to avoid harmful mutagenesis.

While the actions of neurotransmitter modulators on the conductance of gap junctions have been extensively documented, increasing evidence indicates they can also be influenced by the ongoing activity of neural networks, in most cases via local interactions with nearby glutamatergic synapses. We review here early evidence for the existence of activity-dependent regulatory mechanisms as well recent examples reported in mammalian brain.

Design: Prospective, nonblinded, reference-standard comparison study.
Setting: Four accredited inpatient rehabilitation units.
As part of a continuing effort to find noncoherent photon upconversion (NCPU) systems with improved energy conversion efficiencies, the photophysics of the blue emitter, anthanthrene (An), and the fullerene absorber-sensitizer, C60, have been examined by both steady-state and pulsed laser techniques. An is a promising candidate for NCPU by homomolecular triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) because its triplet state lies ∼800 cm(-1) below the triplet energy of the C60 donor (thereby improving efficiency by reducing back triplet energy transfer), and its fluorescent singlet state lies in near resonance with double its triplet energy (thus minimizing thermal energy losses in the annihilation process). In fluid solution, efficient triplet-triplet donor-acceptor energy transfer is observed, and rate constants for homomolecular TTA in the An acceptor are estimated to approach the diffusion limit.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIron is an essential micronutrient for Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae strain B728a and many other microorganisms; therefore, B728a has evolved methods of iron acquirement including the use of iron-chelating siderophores. In this study an extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factor, AcsS, encoded within the achromobactin gene cluster is shown to be a major regulator of genes involved in the biosynthesis and secretion of this siderophore.
