The intra-aortic balloon pump continues to be a useful ventricular assist device in cardiac surgery. Complications are estimated to be 7% to 40%, significantly high to catastrophic. We describe an aortic injury associated with the use of the device and an interdisciplinary management for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach.

The study of the factors that regulate high energy food intake is especially relevant nowadays due to the high prevalence of overweight and obesity. Food intake regulation can be divided in two basic processes, namely satiation and satiety. Satiation is the process that determines the moment in which feeding stops and regulates the amount of ingested food during a single meal.

[Laparoscopic drainage of liver abscess. Initial experience].

Background: Radiologically guided percutaneous drainage has proven to be simple and effective and currently is considered the gold standard of care with success rates between 80 and 87%. However, not all abscesses are amenable to or will resolve with percutaneous drainage. The purpose of this study is to report our 1-year initial experience with laparoscopic drainage of liver abscesses.

[Carpal tunnel syndrome? Case report].

A patient with an initial misdiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome is presented. The clinical manifestations were suggestive of such diagnosis, but there were some anamnesis and exploratory aspects requiring to establish a differential diagnosis. Painful syndrome was caused by a brachial plexus compression at the costoclavicular region due to a subclavicular hematoma in a patient under anticoagulant treatment.

A maize insulin-like growth factor signals to a transduction pathway that regulates protein synthesis in maize.

Insulin and insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are well-characterized regulators in higher eukaryotic cells that control biological processes such as cell growth and survival, and selective translation of mRNAs. This research presents the purification of a 20 kDa protein, isolated from maize tissue, with IGF activity. The protein was purified from 48 h-germinated maize embryonic axes by G-50 Sephadex fractionation followed by affinity chromatography through a bovine insulin antibody-Sepharose column.
