Objective: The objective of this study was to explore Laws' masks analysis to describe structural variations of trabecular bone due to osteoporosis on high-resolution digital radiographs and to check its dependence on the spatial resolution. Laws' masks are well established as one of the best methods for texture analysis in image processing and are used in various applications, but not in bone tissue characterisation. This method is based on masks that aim to filter the images.

We have found that the combination of BMD and texture parameter values provided a better assessment of the fracture risk than that obtainable solely by BMD measurement.
Introduction: Osteoporosis is characterized by BMD and trabecular bone microarchitecture.
Introduction: Animal studies suggest that bone remodeling is under beta-adrenergic control via the sympathetic nervous system. beta blockers have been suggested to stimulate bone formation and/or inhibit bone resorption in animals as well as to reduce the risk of fracture in humans. The purpose of this study was to examine if these agents can have a preventive or therapeutic effect in osteoporosis.

A high-resolution X-ray prototype was developed to assess microarchitecture quality. Images were obtained on os calcis; then, three texture parameters were calculated on the same region of interest (ROI): a fractal parameter, a run-length parameter, and a co-occurrence parameter.
