The Hellenic surgical School for treatment of neuralgias and dystonias as presented in 19th-20th centuries in Greece.

Background: This article examines the surgical techniques used for the treatment of neuralgia and dystonia in Greece during the late 19th to the middle of the twentieth century. It emphasizes on the Greek contribution to neurosurgery.

Methods: The aim of this study is achieved by examining unpublished archives as well as historical documents collected from both the National Library of Greece and the Library of the Hellenic Parliament.

Highlighting the contribution of the Greek physician Theodoros Aretaios to the history of thyroidectomy.

Theodoros Aretaios (1829-1893), having pursued advanced studies at home and abroad and possessing a wide range of competences and interests, was among the first Greek physicians to produce educational treatises for both students and doctors of medicine. Among these is his medical treatise Surgery which deals with thyroid operations and goiter symptoms as well as post-operative lesions which included a record of his extensive experience, learned recommendations, deep insights, and advanced techniques. In this medical archive, which is preserved in the National Library of Greece, there is, for example, the physician's vivid description of a thyroidectomy that he performed which illustrates his expertise as a surgeon as well as the surgical knowledge of his times.

Combination treatment of inflammatory bowel disease: Present status and future perspectives.

The treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), especially those with severe or refractory disease, represents an important challenge for the clinical gastroenterologist. It seems to be no exaggeration to say that in these patients, not only the scientific background of the gastroenterologist is tested, but also the abundance of "gifts" that he should possess (insight, intuition, determination, ability to take initiative, ) for the successful outcome of the treatment. In daily clinical practice, depending on the severity of the attack, IBD is treated with one or a combination of two or more pharmaceutical agents.

Responding to the need of postgraduate education for Planetary Health: Development of an online Master's Degree.

Planetary Health has emerged as a new approach to respond to the existential risks that the clime and global environmental crises pose to human societies. As stated by various stakeholders, the challenges involved in Planetary Health are of such magnitude that education must be at the forefront to obtain a meaningful response. Universities and higher education institutions have been specifically called to embed the concept of planetary stewardship in all curricula and train the next generation of researchers and change makers as a matter of urgency.

PD-L1 Gene Polymorphisms rs822336 G>C and rs822337 T>A: Promising Prognostic Markers in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Patients.

Background and Objectives: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly heterogeneous subtype that is associated with unresponsiveness to therapy and hence with high mortality rates. In this study we aimed to investigate the prognostic role of the rs822336 G>C and rs822337 T>A polymorphisms of the PD-L1 (Programmed Death-Ligand 1) in TNBC patients. Materials and methods: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues from 114 TNBC patients and blood samples from 124 healthy donors were genotyped, and subsequently extensive statistical analysis was performed in order to investigate the clinical value of these polymorphism in TNBC.
