Non-progressive CRMP-5-Associated Perifoveal Retinopathy in a Breast Cancer Patient: A Rare Paraneoplastic Phenomenon.

Paraneoplastic retinopathy (PR) is a rare autoimmune condition typically associated with progressive visual loss and is often linked to anti-recoverin antibodies. Paraneoplastic optic neuropathy (PON) is classically associated with collapsin response-mediator protein (CRMP-5). We present a unique case of non-progressive CRMP-5-associated perifoveal retinitis in a 79-year-old female with a history of breast carcinoma, who has maintained a stable visual acuity over an extended follow-up period of three years.

Linking Downbeat Nystagmus and Aquaporin-4-Positive Neuromyelitis Optica: A Closer Look at Their Hidden Relationship.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), an autoimmune disease, typically presents with loss of vision and myelopathic signs. NMO may be associated with antibodies selective for aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel located within the optic nerves and spinal cord.AQP4 is distributed in the periventricular region, corpus callosum, magnocellular nuclei of the hypothalamus, and brain stem.

Anaphylactic shock during SpaceOAR Vue hydrogel procedure.

In this report, we present a unique and rare case of an intraoperative anaphylactic shock leading to cardiac arrest during the SpaceOAR Vue™ hydrogel procedure in a 70-year-old patient undergoing External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT) for advanced localized prostate cancer. To our knowledge, this is the first urologic case report documenting this adverse reaction associated with the placement of the SpaceOAR Vue product. We discuss the possible culprits, including the hydrogel's polyethylene glycol (PEG) and iodine content, perioperative antibiotics, and local lidocaine anesthetic, and propose relevant considerations for clinicians administering rectal hydrogel spacers.

Blinding Optic Neuropathy Associated With Carboplatin Therapy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Various forms of cancer and chemotherapeutics are associated with optic neuropathy. Cisplatin is a platinum analogue chemotherapeutic commonly associated with ocular toxicity among many other serious adverse effects. Carboplatin is a more chemically stable platinum analogue that is generally better tolerated with a comparatively favorable side effect profile.
