What's in it for citizen scientists? An analysis of participant's gains from a democratisation perspective.

Citizen science projects optimise the democratisation of the production of scientific knowledge. In these initiatives, research processes do not rely solely on scientists' but on citizens' engagement likewise with benefits on both sides. As previous work shows, the democratisation perspective of citizen science projects might be viewed critically as some groups of citizens tend to be overrepresented in these initiatives while other are left out.

Cannabinoids and General Anesthetics: Revisiting Molecular Mechanisms of Their Pharmacological Interactions.

Cannabis has been used for recreation and medical purposes for more than a millennium across the world; however, its use's consequences remain poorly understood. Although a growing number of surgical patients are regular cannabis consumers, little is known regarding the pharmacological interactions between cannabis and general anesthetics; consequently, there is not a solid consensus among anesthesiologists on the perioperative management of these patients. The existing evidence about the molecular mechanisms underlying pharmacological interactions between cannabinoids and anesthetic agents, both in animal models and in humans, shows divergent results.

Protocol using ex vivo mouse brain slice culture mimicking in vivo conditions to study tumor growth and cell motility of glioblastoma cells.

Herein, we present an ex vivo approach to study glioblastoma (GBM) cell motility in viable mouse brain slice cultures, closely mimicking in vivo features. We detail the preparation and culturing of mouse brain slices followed by tumor cell injection, allowing for the analysis of different aspects of the cellular migration and invasion process. Our assay facilitates testing diverse perturbations including genetic modifications and treatments in a physiological context.

Overcoming challenges in conducting early phase breast cancer prevention trials: Bazedoxifene and conjugated estrogens vs waitlist control.

Background: The combination of bazedoxifene 20 mg (BZA) and conjugated estrogens 0.45 mg (CE) marketed as Duavee® is approved for vasomotor symptom relief and osteoporosis prevention. Our pilot study suggested it had potential breast cancer risk reduction, and we proposed a multisite Phase IIB primary prevention trial assessing change in breast imaging and tissue risk biomarkers.
