Introduction: Surgical treatment of distal femoral fractures (DFFs) in osteoporotic bone is challenging despite improvements in hardware and surgical techniques. The occurrence and degree of secondary displacement during healing after bridging plate fixation are still unknown. This study aimed to assess the occurrence and degree of secondary displacement in healing DFFs in elderly patients and correlate the secondary displacement to body mass index, bone density, and weight-bearing regimen.

Article Synopsis
  • Scapula fractures are rare, constituting less than 1% of all fractures, and this study investigates their incidence, classification, treatments, and mortality rates in a large Swedish adult population over nine years.
  • The research analyzed 3,930 patients, revealing that high-energy trauma accounted for 22% of fractures, while nonoperative treatment was favored in 81% of cases; common fracture types included glenoid rim (32%) and scapular body (28%).
  • The findings highlighted that men are more frequently affected, with a 4% mortality rate within a year following the injury, and a significant number of patients experiencing associated fractures.

Background: Restricted weight-bearing is still used after lower extremity fracture surgery in elderly patients. The long-term effect on gait recovery in elderly patients with distal femur fractures (DFF) and their ability to comply with the restrictive weight-bearing regime is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of restricted postoperative weight-bearing on gait recovery (actual weight-bearing and cadence) during a 1-year follow-up.

Background: Semiconstrained total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is an established treatment for elderly patients with distal humeral fractures not amenable to stable internal fixation (unreconstructable). In recent years, there has been increasing interest in elbow hemiarthroplasty (EHA), a treatment option which does not entail restrictions on weight-bearing as opposed to TEA. These 2 treatments have not been compared in a randomized controlled trial (RCT).

Erecta dislocation/inferior dislocation of the shoulder is considered an uncommon injury and the present knowledge stems from case reports or compilation of cases. We believe that there are reasons to believe that the injury is much more prevalent than previously stated. In this review, we discuss the mechanism of injury and based on the number of patients with unusual injury patterns at our hospitals and in the literature, the anatomical features of different variants of inferior dislocation are described.
