Despite the increasing availability of comprehensive next generation sequencing (NGS), its role in characterizing pediatric hematologic malignancies remains undefined. We describe findings from comprehensive genomic profiling of hematologic malignancies at a pediatric tertiary care center. Patients enrolled on a translational research protocol to aid in cancer diagnosis, prognostication, treatment, and detection of cancer predisposition.

During infection, the fusion peptide (FP) of HIV envelope glycoprotein (Env) serves a central role in viral fusion with the host cell. As such, the FP is highly conserved and therefore an attractive epitope for vaccine design. Here, we describe a vaccination study in non-human primates (NHPs) where glycan deletions were made on soluble HIV Env to increase FP epitope exposure.

During antigen-driven responses, B cells can differentiate at extra-follicular (EF) sites or initiate germinal centers (GCs) in processes that involve interactions with T cells. Here, we examined the roles of interleukin (IL)-2 secreted by T helper (Th) cells during cognate interactions with activated B cells. IL-2 boosted the expansion of EF plasma cells and the secretion of low-mutated immunoglobulin G (IgG).

Using quality improvement methods, we aimed to implement a protocol to assess for dementia among adults with Down syndrome (DS). To track implementation, interval retrospective chart review of patients with DS with visits to the Massachusetts General Hospital DS Program (MGH DSP) was conducted quarterly. The impact of a newly implemented protocol created and informed by clinical experts in the MGH DSP including laboratory tests, imaging, referrals, and screening tools for dementia and mental health concerns, was analyzed using statistical process control charts.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibroids can cause serious health issues like anemia, pelvic pain, and infertility, making it crucial for healthcare providers to understand treatment options, particularly uterine artery embolization (UAE), which can help improve these conditions.
  • The article compares international guidelines from several medical organizations and reviewed peer-reviewed studies to present best practices regarding UAE treatment for fibroids, considering different geographical and cultural contexts.
  • Most guidelines agree on the effectiveness of UAE, though they differ on its use for small or specific types of fibroids; collaborative care from gynecologists and interventional radiologists is recommended, and UAE may still be a viable option for patients wanting to maintain fertility.
