Low-cost, open-source, variable speed and incline treadmill for studying impacts of neonatal locomotion.

There is a need for a small-scale, laboratory treadmill to investigate impacts of neonatal locomotion on neuromuscular and musculoskeletal development in small animal models. Adult mice and rats are routinely assessed using commercially available treadmills, but these treadmills can be relatively expensive and they may lack features needed to evaluate developing animals. Therefore, to overcome these limitations, a new treadmill was designed, built and calibrated.

Hearing aid functioning in the preschool setting: stepping back in time?

Purpose: In order for children with hearing impairment to receive maximum benefit from preschool programs, their amplification devices must be functioning appropriately. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the functionality of hearing aids in a preschool setting.

Examining the effectiveness of traditional audiological assessments for nursing home residents with dementia-related behaviors.

Background: It is currently estimated that the resident population of individuals over the age of 65 living in nursing homes will double by 2020. Nearly one-third of all nursing home residents have difficulty seeing or hearing, 46% have some form of dementia, and 30-84% of those with dementia in nursing homes show some form of agitation. Nursing home residents who do not receive appropriate audiological services may experience social isolation, cognitive decline and decreased mobility.

Benign colonic ulcers associated with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug ingestion.

Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs can be associated with benign colonic ulcers. The ulcers are easily diagnosed by colonoscopy, and, if uncomplicated, they are best treated by cessation of the nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. Benign colonic ulcers should be included in the differential diagnosis of any patient who presents with gastrointestinal complaints and is taking nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.
