Ultrathin atomic layer deposited ceria films (< 20 nm) are capable of H2 heterolytic activation at room temperature, undergoing a significant reduction regardless of the absolute pressure, as measured under in-situ conditions by near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. ALD-ceria can gradually reduce as a function of H2 concentration under H2/O2 environments, especially for diluted mixtures below 10%. At room temperature, this reduction is limited to the surface region, where the hydroxylation of the ceria surface induces a charge transfer towards the ceria matrix, reducing Ce4+ cations to Ce3+.

Background: Guidelines advocate pulmonary function testing (PFT) in preoperative evaluation before lung resection. Although forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) are recommended, they are often poor predictors of complications.

Objectives: Determine if PFT testing results other than FEV1 and DLCO are associated with post-operative complications.

Background: This study analyzed weaning characteristics and assessed the association of clinical and ultrasonographic indices-maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), peak flow expiratory (PFE), diaphragm-thickening fraction (DTF), diaphragm thickness (DT), diaphragm excursion (DE), diaphragm-RSBI (D-RSBI), and lung ultrasound (LUS) patterns-with weaning failure.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included critically ill COVID-19 patients aged 18 and older who had been on invasive mechanical ventilation for at least 48 h and undergoing weaning. Exclusion criteria included absence of ultrasound assessments, neuromuscular diseases, and chronic cardio-respiratory dysfunction.
