Article Synopsis
  • Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) often leads to compromised lung function, and this study focuses on the effects of surgical methods, specifically minimally invasive surgery (MIS), on 90-day post-operative mortality in high-risk patients.
  • The research analyzed data from over 46,000 patients, identifying high-risk individuals with poor lung function, and found a significantly higher mortality rate in this group compared to low-risk patients.
  • Results indicated that high-risk patients undergoing MIS had lower mortality rates than those undergoing traditional open surgery, even matching the mortality rates of low-risk patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Fragile and conflict-affected areas struggle with high antimicrobial resistance due to weak health policies, interrupted supply chains, and poor understanding of antibiotic usage among both providers and users.
  • Humanitarian organizations have primarily addressed multidrug resistant infections in surgical settings without sufficient attention to antimicrobial stewardship in primary health care, where most antibiotics are prescribed.
  • The paper highlights the experiences of Médecins sans Frontières and the International Committee of the Red Cross to suggest incorporating antimicrobial stewardship into primary health care in conflict zones, aiming to enhance global efforts against antimicrobial resistance and reduce preventable deaths.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) represent an increasing global challenge with the majority of mortality occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Concurrently, many humanitarian crises occur in these countries and the number of displaced persons, either refugees or internally displaced, has reached the highest level in history. Until recently NCDs in humanitarian contexts were a neglected issue, but this is changing.

Background: Lung transplantation (LT) is an identified risk factor for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP). However, PCP management and outcomes remain poorly described in LT recipients and PCP incidence is rarely documented in this population.

Methods: PCP episodes that occurred in 9 French LT centers between January 2010 and October 2017 were included in this analysis.
