The Wellcome Image Awards are celebrating their 20th year of bringing us the world's most incredible science and health images this year. The 2017 winners can be seen at exhibitions to be held simultaneously across the UK, in science centres from Aberdeen to the Eden Project, as well as in Russia and South Africa. Over the last 20 years many images have featured amongst the winners and this gallery showcases the images from the contemporary clinical collection that were successful during that time.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIn response to increasing pressure on inpatient services and a meta-analysis indicating that cisplatin (C) is superior to carboplatin, we report a phase II trial of gemcitabine (G) and split-dose C in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in an outpatient setting. Patients with stage IIIB/IV NSCLC received: G/C 1250/40 mg/m(2); G and C were given on day (d) 1 and d8 in a 21d cycle. Patients with performance status 0-2, adequate bone marrow function and calculated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) >50 ml/min were eligible.

This study shows the planning process and the first stages of the implementation of a project to digitize over 120,000 photographic negatives and transparencies from The Wellcome Trust's Medical Photographic Library collection. It shows how and why decisions were made and the resulting resourcing implications. Following the planning and proposal stages it details the results of tests carried out after equipment installation, and the subsequent revisions of original estimates and amendments to decisions on resolution levels.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFDimethyl sulfoxide added to cultures first treated with 5-iododeoxyuridine increased C-type virus production approximately tenfold in a human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line. 5-Iododeoxyuridine followed by dimethyl sulfoxide also activated a similar C-type virus in a metastatic tumor from a bronchial node taken from a 52-year-old male.
