Background: Fatigue and mental workload are directly associated with high-complexity tasks. In general, difficult tasks produce a higher mental workload, leaving little opportunity to deal with new/unexpected events and increasing the likelihood of performance errors. View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: The admitted benefits of intraperitoneal chemotherapy during postoperative administration for the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis from ovarian origin are limited by their associated morbidity and restricted diffusion by the presence of multiple intra-abdominal adherences. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the security, effectiveness, and cytoreduction optimization of intraperitoneal paclitaxel administration previously to radical surgery/peritonectomy/HIPEC (hyperthermic intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy) either in monotherapy or combined with intravenous carboplatin.
Methods: Prospective pilot study of 10 patients with ovarian peritoneal carcinomatosis in stage IIIc-FIGO without previous treatment.
Peritoneal carcinomatosis, considered years ago as a final stage of unresectable cancer, can now be managed with curative intention by means of a radical cytoreductive surgical procedure with associated peritonectomy and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, as described by Sugarbaker. Malignant neoplasms such as mesothelioma and pseudomyxoma peritonei, ovarian and colon cancer nowadays are experiencing some new therapeutical approaches. Higher survival rates can be reached in ovarian cancer, which is commonly diagnosed in the presence of peritoneal carcinomatosis, using an optimal cytoreductive radical surgery with intraperitoneal chemotherapy.
