The effect of a mucilage extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill (OFI) cladodes was tested in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged HepG2 hepatocarcinoma cells, through a combined in vitro-in silico approach. The OFI mucilage was characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry.

Heterozygous mutations or genetic variants in the gene, which encodes for the β-glucocerebrosidase (GCase), a lysosomal hydrolase enzyme, may increase the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) onset. The heterozygous E326K form is one of the most common genetic risk factors for PD worldwide, but, to date, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigate the effect of the E326K on the structure, stability, dimerization process, and interaction mode with some proteins of the interactome of GCase using multiple molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at pH 5.

Background: Pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant treatment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is a rare occurrence. Similar to other malignancies, achieving a pathologic complete response in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma seems to correlate with improved survival. However, because of the rarity of such events, the true significance of pathologic complete response in pancreatic cancer remains unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Forests in Europe cover about one-third of the continent and play a crucial role in climate protection by sequestering carbon and providing various ecosystem services.
  • A comprehensive study analyzed 415 long-term experiments and found that overall forest growth has significantly accelerated since the late 19th century, although there are regional differences in growth trends.
  • In particular, Scots pine shows strong growth increases in Northern Europe, declines in the Southwest, and less pronounced changes across Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, indicating the need for adaptive forest management based on regional conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • PRRS virus affects pigs globally, leading to significant losses, particularly in piglets and pregnant sows, with outcomes influenced by strain virulence, environmental factors, and genetics.
  • A study analyzed genetic variations (polymorphisms) in slaughtered pigs from Central Italy, extracting RNA from 377 samples and detecting viral RNA to classify animals as infected or not.
  • The research identified 36 haplotypes and 62 genotypes, with three linked to potential disease resistance, marking a pioneering investigation that contributes valuable insights for improving resistance to PRRS through Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS).
