The sustained consumption of sucrose-rich diet has deleterious effects on the adrenal cortex, impairing its steroidogenic capacity. As hemin treatment has been shown to exert cytoprotective effects (e.g.

A positive association has been demonstrated between consumption of sucrose-sweetened beverages and the prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Since the administration of 30 % sucrose in the drinking water (sucrose-rich diet (SRD)) to rats has proven to be a good model of systemic insulin resistance, the aim of our study was to analyse the effect of caloric restriction applied on SRD-treated rats by switching back to a standard diet, on liver morphology, function and metabolism. Consumption of an SRD causes a metabolic shift towards gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis leading to an increase in TAG levels in plasma and in the liver that were associated with a decrease in insulin sensitivity.

Potential activation of β2 adrenergic receptors (β2AR) by specific autoreactive antibodies (Abs) that arise during the host reaction to , could contribute to the elevated prevalence of metabolic disturbances described in patients with chronic Chagas disease (CCD). This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anti-β2AR Abs in patients with CCD, as well as the correlation of these Abs with the presence of glucose and lipid metabolism disturbances, in order to explore their association with an insulin resistance profile. Additionally, we tested the functional effects of anti-β2AR Abs employing an in vitro bioassay with neuroendocrine cells expressing β2AR.

Prenatal exposure to glucocorticoids (GC) is a central topic of interest in medicine since GCs are essential for the maturation of fetal organs and intrauterine growth. Synthetic glucocorticoids, which are used in obstetric practice, exert beneficial effects on the fetus, but have also been reported to lead to intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR). In this study, a model of growth restriction in mice was established through maternal administration of dexamethasone during late gestation.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) vGPCR is a constitutively active G protein-coupled receptor that subverts proliferative and inflammatory signaling pathways to induce cell transformation in Kaposi's sarcoma. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inflammatory mediator that plays a key regulatory role in the activation of tumor angiogenesis. Using two different transformed mouse models and tumorigenic full KSHV genome-bearing cells, including KSHV-Bac16 based mutant system with a vGPCR deletion, we demostrate that vGPCR upregulates COX-2 expression and activity, signaling through selective MAPK cascades.
